Where do you apply?
There are three routes. Which is fastest depends on the appointments available at the time.
- In Spain: at the Oficina de Extranjería or a Policía Nacional station, by appointment (cita previa).
- From abroad: at a Spanish consulate in your country. It often takes longer, but you do not have to travel.
- Through a power of attorney: a lawyer or gestor applies for you. This is the usual route if you are not in Spain.
Which documents do you need?
Bring them as originals and as copies.
- The completed EX-15 form.
- Your valid passport or identity card.
- Proof of payment of the fee, form 790 with código 012.
- The reason for the application, for example a reservation agreement or a letter from your agent or lawyer.
NIE, NIF and residence
For a foreigner the NIE number is also the tax number (NIF). An NIE number is not a residence permit. If you are an EU citizen and will live in Spain for more than three months, you register at the Extranjería and receive a certificado de registro with the same number. UK and other non-EU citizens need a visa or residence permit to live in Spain; the NIE alone does not give you that right.
Apply in good time
Without an NIE number you cannot complete at the notary or open a bank account. Appointments are sometimes only available weeks ahead. So start as soon as you begin searching seriously, or have it arranged through a power of attorney.
This guide is general information, not legal or tax advice. Have your own situation checked by a lawyer or tax adviser.
